Self-regulation: managing emotion and attention is learned
The difficulty preschool teachers name most often is not behaviour but self-regulation. Every classroom has children who cannot wait a turn, who move on before finishing, who cannot recover from disappointment. Reading this in moral language — “naughty”, “spoilt” — means missing the solution. Like language and walking, self-regulation is a developing, supportable set of skills.
Three components
It helps to think in three parts. Emotional regulation: recognising and settling intense feeling. Attention regulation: staying with a stimulus and shifting when needed. Behavioural regulation: delaying an impulse. A child usually struggles in one of the three, not all — and the response differs accordingly.
In early childhood these skills are first built from outside. The adult's calm voice, a predictable daily rhythm and repeated routines do the regulating the child cannot yet do alone. Over time that external order is internalised. So a child expected to “pull themselves together” first needs the experience of being pulled together with someone.
What works in the classroom
- Announce transitions: “we tidy up in five minutes” lightens the load on impulse control.
- Name the feeling: “you were angry because your tower fell” gives the child language for the experience.
- Grade the waiting: turn-taking starts at 30 seconds, not five minutes.
- A calm corner is a place to rest, not a punishment; children are invited there, never sent.
One caution: difficulty with self-regulation is by itself an indicator of no diagnosis. Knowing what is expected at each age protects the teacher from both unnecessary worry and hasty judgement. When difficulties persist and clearly disrupt the child's daily life, the task is not to label but to record the observation and share it with the family — and, where needed, with a specialist.
Self-regulation is among the strongest predictors of school readiness — ahead even of letter knowledge. The good news: it can be taught directly. A patient adult, a predictable day and feelings that get named are enough for most children.
