Beyond “How was today?”: three habits that truly grow family engagement

Family engagement is one of early childhood’s strongest findings: when families join daily life and learning, children’s development is supported. But engagement is not measured in notifications. A parent receiving ten messages a day while never seeing their child’s development is informed — not engaged.

1 · A specific moment instead of a general question

“What did you do today?” usually ends in “nothing”. A question built on a specific moment opens the door: “What did you build at the block corner today?” For that, the family needs to see the day — one shared moment becomes a dinner-table conversation starter.

2 · Following development as a story

Scores and percentiles don’t explain a child; they produce anxiety or false comfort. What works is a story: “This month she began putting her feelings into words.” A story also hints at what to do at home.

3 · Small, playful continuations at home

Continuing a school-born interest with a small game at home is engagement in its most natural form — like building patterns while setting the table with a pattern-loving child. Not grand programmes; short, joyful, relationship-feeding moments.
